the house – chosing a home design software

十二月 27, 2008

while the thrilling thoughts of owning a house (or half of it) is becoming closer to reality, one thing probably excites me the most is the ‘projects’ we will be working on after closing the deal. I am a hands-on type, ideas of working on a physical object and getting my hands dirty are much more stimulating (aka, i hate dealing with paperworks and legal documents. good thing that jordan is a master of such).

yesterday, i pulled out the sketch book we used in 4.101 (experiencing architecture studio)

…[sidetracked]  took many classes with MIT School of Architecture and Planning (we call it course 4), but most of them are in the visual art program. 4.101 is the only  architecture class i had, i left it to my senior year since i know these arch studio classes are all really hardcore. looking back, this is actually my favorite class. i love the big open studio work space; i love all the tools and materials we got; i love the teaching, studio time and field trips; i love drawing my ideas out, then get my hands dirty by playing with concrete; of course, spending a whole night at studio is so much more enjoyable than doing a p-set all night….

[back] so, we went to the house and took measurements of both floors and attics. this house actually has a great floor plan for as rental property – big center space (connected kitchen and living room) surrounded by three small bedrooms on both floor (each is about the size of our current living room and bedroom). it’s pretty typical or even on the better side of 1900 cambridge/somerville apartment rooms layout. and the attics are more spacious than my first impression when we first visited the house, i would totally live there for the interesting space and a $300-400 cheap rent. i sketched the floor plans out for each floor in my arch sketch book. i want to transfer it into a professional drawing using a real architecture software. this morning i was looking through my old google sketchup drawings from 4.101, and remembered all the joy. i gave myself a big clap and a big puff of the chest, saying, ” let’s pick this up again!”

this is a perfect chance to learn more. sketchup is not the most user friendly software, i have to admit. most students in my class had troubles with it. i want to learn a more professional one. i read through the top 6 home design software on about.com, and currently settled on home designer suite. we will see what happens…

YAY!
