miracle fruits – secret of winning all the lime eating contests

二月 16, 2009

神秘果 in chinese. just its name, makes you want to know more and even try it. Harvard University had a fruit tasting event about this miracle fruit. so Jordan googled it, and bought a package mircale fruit tablets on amazon.com. this plant somehow alternates your taste buds and turns sour to sweet taste. of course, magically 😉 or scientists would say the berry contains an active glycoprotein molecule, with some trailing carbohydrate chains, called miraculin. When the fleshy part of the fruit is eaten, this molecule binds to the tongue’s taste buds, causing sour foods to taste sweet.

quoting wikipedia, “The berry, also known as Miracle Berry, Magic Berry, Miraculous Berry or Flavour Berry, was first documented by explorer Chevalier des Marchais who searched for many different fruits during a 1725 excursion to its native West Africa. Marchais noticed that local tribes picked the berry from shrubs and chewed it before meals.”

the first time we try this we digged out EVERYTHING we have in the refrigerator and cabinet that contains any type of acid. we looked like a pair of starving mice, going wild in the kitchen after people went to sleep or something. haha. then we offerred to other people when people were over for fun. we’ve tried lemon, lime, grapefruit, tomato, orange, apple, onion, beer, red wine vinegar and chinese black vinegar. salsa dip tasted like honey dip, haha. why is it so much fun when our senses were altered? one thing to warn you about: your lips and stomach might be really upset if your tongue enjoys too much “sweets” like this.
